November 2023: Pennsylvania online casino revenues increase
Pennsylvania’s regulated online casinos increased revenues by more than 24% in October 2023 compared to October 2022, according to state regulators.
Keystone State iCasinos recorded $154.8m in revenue in October 2023 compared to roughly $124.5m the same month a year earlier. This represented a 24.3% year-over-year increase.
The October 2023 revenue figures generated nearly $66.5m in taxes for the state.
Digital slots accounted for nearly $110m of the state’s iGaming revenue haul compared to $42.6m for online table games. Real money online poker accounted for $2.3m in revenue.
The Hollywood Casino license encompassing BetMGM as well as DraftKings and Penn Entertainment’s digital platform was the state’s revenue leader. The trio generated more than $62m in total revenue. Valley Forge (FanDuel) and Rivers Casino (BetRivers and MGM’s Borgata) were second and third in October 2023 revenue with $35.4m and $29.3m, respectively.
No other PA casino license generated more than $10m during the month.
BetMGM has been in a battle with DraftKings and FanDuel for the No. 1 online casino gaming spot in Pennsylvania and several other markets. Michigan’s market share leader, BetMGM has seen tighter competition between its two main rivals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and West Virginia.
The trio made up the bulk of Pennsylvania’s $829m in October 2023 sports betting handle, the state’s single-month record. Sports betting generated $48m in revenues during its record-setting October, less than a third of the revenue generated by digital casino platforms during that same time.
October 2023: BetMGM battles with lessened Pennsylvania market share
BetMGM is facing increasing competition from its primary iGaming rivals in Pennsylvania, company officials announced earlier this year.
Though Pennsylvania regulators don’t publicly announce online casino gaming revenues by individual sites, MGM officials said at a recent earnings call that DraftKings and FanDuel have bitten into its iGaming market share. Though a distant third in the US online sports betting market share race behind FanDuel and DraftKings, BetMGM had touted the strength of its digital online slot and table game platform, where it had perennially been the US leader.
Pennsylvania is one of just four competitive, regulated, real money online casino gaming markets, along with New Jersey, West Virginia, and Michigan. DraftKings and FanDuel have a de facto iGaming duopoly in Connecticut.
