The abolishment of PASPA in 2018 means the US is regulated on a state-by-state basis. Michigan was certainly not the first to regulate online gambling (New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia all beat them to the punch). Still, it is unique in that it legalized all three of its online gambling markets (casino, sports, and poker) simultaneously. The first Michigan online casino and sports bets were taken on January 22, 2021, and the state’s first poker site - PokerStars Michigan - launched a week later.
Whether you prefer slots, table games, sports betting, or peer-to-peer poker tournaments, the state has it all. Let’s take a closer look at the lead-up to Michigan’s online gambling debut.
Tribal gambling was legalized in 1988, and there are 24 tribal casinos in operation in Michigan.
Permission to build the state’s three commercial casinos - MGM Grand Detroit, Greektown Casino, and MotorCity Casino Hotel - was granted in 1996.
Alongside casino games, poker tables, and bingo halls, there are over a dozen retail sportsbooks spread across the state’s tribal and commercial casinos.
The first MI online gambling bill was introduced by Sen. Mike Kowall in April 2016. Despite some support in committee, it struggled to get traction and ultimately flopped.
More bills surfaced throughout 2017 and 2018. Eventually, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an expansive online gambling package into law on December 20, 2019.
The package included HB 4311 (the Lawful Internet Gaming Act), HB 4916 (the Lawful Sports Betting Act), and four more bills relating to fantasy sports, pari-mutuel horse wagering, charitable gaming, and the removal of online gambling from the Penal Code.
HB 4311 laid out the key provisions for online gambling in Michigan: anyone 21 or over could gamble; both tribal and commercial casinos could offer slots, table games, and poker; and a land-based casino could offer one online poker brand and one online casino.
To launch online, a land-based operator would need to pay a $50,000 application fee, a $100,000 five-year license fee, and a further $50,000 renewal fee.
65% of internet tax revenue would go to the Internet Gaming Fund, the majority of which would go to the Michigan School Aid Fund. A further 30% would go towards public safety programs, and the last 5% would maintain the state’s horse racing industry.
After 13 months of careful planning, Michigan’s online casino and sports betting markets launched on January 22, 2021.
The state’s online poker market launched a week later, on January 29.
Michigan online casino gaming generated over $1.4 billion in revenue in its first year.
BetMGM, BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, FanDuel, PointsBet, and Wynnbet were among the first casinos to go live on January 22. There are currently 14 online casinos in Michigan in operation.
More than 10 online sportsbooks launched on the same day, including WynnBet, DraftKings, Golden Nugget, BetRivers, and Barstool. Only five more have launched in the time since.
PokerStars was the first peer-to-peer poker site to go live in MI on January 29, with BetMGM Poker and WSOP Poker Michigan following in March.

To make it onto our esteemed list of MI online casinos, every site must pass through a strict review process from our team of industry professionals. Our experts at OnlineCasinos.com consider an extensive list of variables when examining the safety of a casino, so you can guarantee that you’ll only find the most reputable casinos recommended on this page.
We won’t deem a casino safe to play at unless it holds a valid license from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB). This reassures us that the casino has the necessary government-standard safety regulations in place (such as firewalls, AML measures, and SSL encryption technology) and that the MGCB can intervene if anything goes wrong.
We also make sure the casino offers an extensive responsible gambling page. Player safety is our number one concern, so a casino must have tools in place to help players manage their gambling.
Players can fund their Michigan online casino accounts and withdraw their winnings using a wide range of secure and popular payment methods. Most of these options boast instant deposit times, so you can start wagering your funds in a matter of minutes.
You’ll need to submit a withdrawal request to cash out your winnings. This will usually take between 24-78 hours for the casino to process. Depending on your withdrawal method, your payout can arrive anywhere between a couple of hours to five business days.
The list of available payment methods might differ from one casino to the next, but you can typically find a good mix of the following:
Debit/credit cards: You’re guaranteed to find a debit or credit card option at any Michigan casino, making them one of the most widely available payment methods around. Visa and Mastercard are the most common, though you can often pay with Discover and American Express.
E-wallets: E-wallets are one of the most popular ways to pay at a Michigan online casino. Boasting one-hour payout speeds, e-wallets save you from entering your details every time you make a deposit. Common e-wallets include PayPal, Apple Pay, Venmo, Neteller, and Skrill.
Bank transfer: If you’re looking for security and convenience, bank transfers are a great option (though you’ll need a little patience when it comes to withdrawals.) All you need to make a deposit is your account name and number.
ACH: ACH (or eCheck) works like a bank transfer, except with an additional step in the clearance process. Though they can take a day longer to land in your account than bank transfers, they boast even higher levels of security.
Play+: This customizable prepaid card is a staple of top Michigan casinos like FanDuel and BetRivers. One massive advantage of Play+ withdrawals is that you can receive your winnings instantly (after processing.)
PaySafeCard: Pick up this prepaid card at your local CVS, 7-Eleven, or Walmart and fund your casino account with a secure cash deposit. Instead of inputting your financial data to the casino, you simply top up your card and use the unique number on your PaysafeCard.
PayNearMe: PayNearMe works in a similar way to PaySafeCard, but you don’t do any of the work. Take your PayNearMe barcode to your nearest eligible store, hand your cash over the counter, and the clerk will deposit the money directly into your casino account.
If you plan on playing at a real-money MI casino, there are some key factors to consider when choosing which casino game to wager on. Every game has a Return to Player (RTP) percentage, and taking it into consideration may improve your chances of landing a win.
Simply put, the RTP is the statistical amount that a game will pay back to players over time. Theoretically, the higher the RTP, the more likely it is to pay out. The best real-money casino games will have high RTP percentages, with many boasting 98% and above. Understanding how RTP works can help you make the most informed choices and select the best games to suit your personal preferences.
There are plenty of good casinos out there, but there are several specific elements that a site must have to make it a great casino. Our casino experts analyze each of these elements when reviewing a casino, including bonuses, games, payments, mobile capabilities, security, and more. We do the hard work and put each casino to the test to save you the hassle. However, it’s good practice to pay attention to these areas when selecting a site for yourself.
